Sucralose is one of the most common artificial sweeteners found in sugar-free products marketed as “healthy” alternatives. It appears in everything from fizzy drinks and protein powders to chewing gum and sweetener sachets. In the United States, it is best known under the brand name Splenda, while in South Africa, brands such as Canderel Yellow and Naturally Sweet prominently feature it. Despite its popularity, mounting evidence suggests that sucralose is far from harmless.

A Chemical Sweetener Born from Insecticide Research

Sucralose was discovered by accident in 1976 at Queen Elizabeth College in London. Researchers investigating chlorinated sugar compounds for insecticide use instructed a chemist to “test” one of the compounds. He misheard the directive as “taste” and was surprised by its sweet flavour.

Although sucralose was initially intended for industrial applications, its intense sweetness (600 times sweeter than sugar) quickly made it a lucrative candidate for food products. Tate & Lyle, in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson, patented it and marketed it as a calorie-free sweetener under the brand Splenda. Despite its insecticidal origins, regulatory authorities, including the FDA and European agencies, approved its use in food products.

1. Gut Health Disruption

Scientific studies have revealed that sucralose negatively affects gut microbiota, the essential bacteria in our digestive systems.

Given the overwhelming evidence of harm, it’s clear that sucralose has no place in a health-conscious diet. Opt for natural sweeteners instead:

  • Raw Honey: Rich in antioxidants and minerals.
  • Dates and Dried Fruits: Naturally sweet and nutrient-dense.
  • Stevia: A plant-based, zero-calorie sweetener.
  • Coconut Sugar: A lower glycaemic alternative.
  • Maple Syrup: Natural, antioxidant-rich sweetener alternative.

Dr Mindy Pelz advises, “It’s better to consume moderate amounts of real sugar than to expose your body to the metabolic chaos caused by artificial sweeteners.”


Choose Health Over Hype

Sucralose is a chemical compound born from insecticide research that disrupts gut health, confuses metabolic processes, and may even harm brain function. For children, the risks are even more alarming. The promise of “zero calories” is not worth the potential long-term damage to your health.
