Flavourful, Satisfying, and Homemade: Redefining Comfort Food with Clean Ingredients!
As part of our #Homemade campaign, I’m here to show you that many of your favourite comfort foods – like crispy, breaded chicken strips – can be reinvented into healthier, tastier, guilt-free versions at home. With a few smart ingredient swaps and the marvel of an air fryer, you can enjoy succulent chicken strips with the perfect crunch – minus the toxic seed oils, gluten, and nasty additives that often accompany store-bought or fast-food options.
Homemade food is not just better for your health; it’s also infinitely more satisfying. Mass-produced, ultra-processed deep-fried chicken products may be convenient, but they’re often saturated with seed oils that harm your metabolism, loaded with additives that make you feel bloated and exhausted, and designed by food scientists to be addictive. These companies don’t prioritise your health – they prioritise their bottom line. It’s time to take back control and create food that nourishes your body and satisfies your soul.

Why Skip Store-Bought Chicken Strips?
The Hidden Dangers of Non-Free-Range Chicken:
Another major issue with store-bought chicken strips is the quality of the meat itself. Most mass-produced chicken products are made from battery-farmed chickens – animals raised in cramped, inhumane conditions, with little to no regard for their health or well-being. Here’s why this matters to your health and conscience:
Nutritional Inferiority:
The meat from battery-farmed chickens is often lower in key nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids and higher in inflammatory omega-6s due to their poor diet and sedentary lifestyle.
Cramped, Inhumane Conditions:
Battery-farmed chickens are kept in overcrowded environments where they can barely move. These unsanitary conditions breed disease and immense stress, leading to weaker, sicker animals.
Arsenic and Growth Stimulants:
To maximise profit, some producers add arsenic-based drugs to the chickens’ feed to artificially enhance growth and give the meat a plump, pink appearance. Over time, arsenic residues can accumulate in your body, increasing the risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses.
Genetically Modified Feed:
These chickens are fed cheap GMO corn and soy, which are heavily sprayed with harmful pesticides like glyphosate. These toxins pass through to the meat you consume, disrupting your gut and contributing to long-term health issues.
Antibiotic Overuse:
To keep disease at bay in such unnatural living conditions, these chickens are pumped full of antibiotics. This contributes to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, posing a significant threat to public health.

Let’s take a closer look at the other health-destroying ingredients commonly found in store-bought chicken strips and why they’re best left on the shelf:
- Gluten:
Found in the breading, gluten is a common trigger of inflammation, especially for those with intolerances or sensitivities. It can lead to bloating, brain fog, skin flare-ups, and even joint pain. For some, it exacerbates autoimmune conditions and damages gut health. - Vegetable Oils (Sunflower Oil, Cottonseed Oil):
These industrial seed oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which promote chronic inflammation when consumed in excess. The high-heat processing they undergo creates trans fats, which damage cell membranes, impair metabolism, and contribute to heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. - Improving Agents:
These synthetic chemicals are added to enhance texture or preserve shelf life, but they can disrupt your gut microbiome, impair digestion, and even contain harmful residues that accumulate in the body over time. - Maize (GMO):
Genetically modified maize, often used as a filler, is sprayed with glyphosate (a harmful pesticide) and offers little nutritional value. It can irritate the gut lining, increase inflammation, and has been linked to long-term health concerns like hormonal imbalances. - Colourants:
Artificial colours make food look appealing but often at a cost to your health. Some are linked to behavioural issues like hyperactivity in children, allergies, and long-term risks such as cancer with frequent consumption. - Stabilisers:
Stabilisers are used to maintain texture and prevent separation in processed foods. These additives can hinder digestion and disrupt the gut microbiome. - Maltodextrin
This processed carbohydrate has an extremely high glycaemic index (even higher than sugar!), causing rapid blood sugar spikes. Frequent consumption leads to insulin resistance, weight gain, and energy crashes. - Acidity Regulators:
Used to control the pH of foods, acidity regulators may sound harmless, but some can irritate the stomach lining and contribute to acidity imbalances in the body. - Spice Extracts:
Unlike fresh spices, these extracts often undergo chemical processing, stripping them of their natural nutrients while leaving behind potential chemical residues. - Flavour Enhancers (e.g., MSG):
These additives make food highly addictive by overstimulating your taste buds. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and its hidden sources (like yeast extract) are linked to headaches, inflammation, and overstimulation of brain neurons, leading to symptoms like fatigue or anxiety. - Anti-Caking Agents:
Commonly used to keep powdered ingredients from clumping, these agents can contain aluminium compounds, which may accumulate in the brain and are linked to neurological conditions. - Phosphates:
Added to improve texture and extend shelf life, phosphates can disrupt the balance of calcium and phosphorus in your body. Excessive intake has been linked to weakened bones, kidney damage, and increased risk of heart disease.

Health Benefits of the Ingredients
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. With just a handful of clean, wholesome ingredients, you can create crispy, flavourful chicken strips that are packed with nutrients. Here’s why each ingredient is a superstar:
1. Quality Chicken Breast
- Source of Lean Protein: Chicken breast is a high-quality protein that helps build and repair muscles, supports immune function, and keeps you feeling full longer.
- Control Over Quality: Choosing organic or free-range chicken ensures you avoid consuming harmful antibiotics, growth hormones, and toxins commonly found in battery-farmed chickens. Organic, pasture-raised options also provide better flavour and higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
2. Egg
- Natural Binding Agent: Eggs act as the perfect binder for the coating, eliminating the need for processed breading ingredients.
- Nutrient-Rich: Eggs are packed with vitamins (like B12 and D), high-quality protein, and healthy fats that support brain health and energy. Opt for organic or pasture-raised eggs for the best nutritional profile.
3. Avocado Oil
- Heart-Healthy Fat: Rich in monounsaturated fats, avocado oil supports heart health, lowers inflammation, and boosts nutrient absorption.
- Heat Stability: Its high smoke point makes it ideal for air frying, preserving its health benefits while keeping the texture perfectly crispy.
4. Organic Garlic Powder
- Immune Booster: Garlic is known for its antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties, thanks to its natural compound, allicin.
- Anti-Inflammatory: It supports heart health and reduces inflammation in the body.
5. Organic Onion Powder
- Rich in Antioxidants: Onion powder contains quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that supports immunity and fights inflammation.
- Digestive Health: It adds flavour without the need for unhealthy additives or preservatives.
6. Organic Paprika (or Smoked Paprika)
- Vitamin Powerhouse: Paprika is loaded with vitamins A, E, and C, which support immune function and skin health.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Its compounds can help reduce inflammation and support overall wellness.
- Smoky Depth: Smoked paprika adds an irresistible flavour profile without any artificial additives.
7. Quality Salt
- Essential Minerals: Using high-quality salt, like Himalayan or sea salt, ensures you’re consuming essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Avoid refined table salt, which is stripped of its nutrients.
8. Quality Parmesan Cheese
- Flavour and Texture: Parmesan cheese brings a rich, savoury flavour that elevates the coating and ensures the perfect crispness.
- Source of Calcium: It’s an excellent source of calcium for bone health and protein for muscle repair. Choose a high-quality brand to avoid unnecessary additives.

This recipe proves that you don’t need long ingredient lists or unhealthy shortcuts to create something truly delicious. With minimal, nutrient-dense ingredients, you can enjoy chicken strips that are full of flavour, perfectly textured, and kind to your body.
